Park Turns Into Lake
Located at the foot of the Hochschwab Mountains, in Tragoess, Styria, Green Lake is part of a rare natural phenomenon that turns one of Austria’s most beautiful hiking trails into a 12-meter emerald green water lake.
How this Happens: During the cold winter months, this place is almost completely dry, and is used as a country park frequently visited by backpackers. But as soon as temperatures rise, the snow and ice covering the mountaintops begins to melt, and fills the basin below with crystal-clear water.
FYI: Due to the clear water, the visibility reaches up to 40 meters, and you land up seeing all that was above ground for half the year underwater, including – trees, roads, and benches. To make the experience more authentic for divers, every year fishermen also release trouts and some other fish into the valley, creating a surreal setting for underwater imagery._
