Access All Areas: Rahul Lal

An indie-music enthusiast Rahul Lal had been playing music himself for over a decade before he took up photography professionally. A well-established photographer today, Rahul feels his choice of specialization was an unconscious decision. ‘The fact that I knew a lot of musicians around, made it easier for me to get into gigs, hang out with the band, understand their sensibilities and basically have access to all areas. Having been in the music circuit for that long a period, it was tough to just let go, shooting gigs made me feel at home.’

Besides meeting musicians from all over the globe, his driving force is his love for the travel it entails. ‘The last music festival I shot was in Gulmarg a few weeks back. Had it not been for music photography, I don’t think I would have visited such a beautiful part of India,’ exclaims Rahul.

Talking about his work at the Access All Areas exhibit at The Living Room Café, New Delhi, Rahul believes ‘the most exhilarating shots one can capture at a concert are the ones which depict the energy and the interaction of the artist on stage with the crowd. If you can capture that particular moment, you’ve got a bloody good shot.’_
