Garuda is Back!
The EDM king pin is back and is currently busy resurrecting nights all over the country. Gareth Emery is on a four-city tour organized and run by Submerge round India – Bombay, Hyderabad, Bangalore and Pune are all on his radar! The Manchester based DJ is all about fusing progressive and trance with tribal and tech to create his distinct and endlessly energetic sound. He released his first album Northern Lights in 2010 after being around for close to a decade. The time before was spent getting discovered, putting out tracks and podcasts that soon spread like wild fire, hitting the hottest clubs around the UK and becoming the pet favourite of leading DJs like Armin Van Burren, Paul Van Dyk and Pete Tong. Today he has his own label Garuda and is ready with his third album The Sound of Garuda Chapter II.
You’re no stranger to India now. Musically what has your India experience been like and what are you looking forward to? Ah, well it’s been a year since I was last here, so I’ve been looking forward to coming back a lot! I collaborated with Brute Force from Chennai on my last album Northern Lights for the track Arrival, which included a traditional Indian flute player. It got a great response both here and in the rest of the world so I’d be certain to work with more Indian talent in the future. I’m looking forward to the food, the incredible crowds, and India is always one of the most interesting places to visit for me on a cultural level.
World no. 7 on DJ Mag. How do you understand your own music and where do you see it headed? I’m not sure. I don’t have a master plan, I’m just doing what comes naturally and making the music I love. As far as DJ Mag goes, I don’t take that poll too seriously. It’s more of a reflection of who gets votes rather than talent. I’d prefer to be judged on my music.
Tell us a little bit your most recent release The Sound of Garuda – Chapter 2? Well, it’s the second album in the series where I try and showcase the sound of the Garuda label and club nights. But for this CD, every track is exclusive and made especially for the album, so it’s very fresh. I think it gives a good snapshot of the current sound of my label and I’m really happy with it.
